a san jose mother admits to a kidnapping hoax and may farmings and jail time, as well. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec down in san jose where neighbors and police are not too happy about this, i guess, anne, right? >> reporter: obviously not. the big question this morning, why would this mother do this? this community has gone from fear to shock to anger in the past few days. our reporter tracked down this woman yesterday but she refused to answer any questions. on tuesday, police say she told them someone tried to steal her toddler from her arm. in front of their house on dayo court and even helped police make a sketch of that man. it then put the whole neighborhood on alert. police became suspicious when canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance video. then they got nothing from that search. so they started focusing on the mother after they learned she had a criminal history. they won't give any specks about that. they are not mincing words

about it lie. >> despicable. you can't say enough about anybody who presents information like this especially when dealing with kids and to think about the lies that she created. >> reporter: so now it is going to be up to the district attorney here in santa clara county to decide whether or not to charge this woman. penalties could be up to 6 months in jail if they do. right now live in san jose, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. former cyclist lance armstrong is now confirming the suspicions of many that he used performance-enhancing drugs. part of an interview with oprah winfrey aired last night. >> yes or no, did you ever take banned substances to enhance your cycling performance? >> yes. >> yes or no, was one of those banned substances epo? >> yes. >> did you ever blood dope or use blood transfusions to enhance your cycling performance? >> yes. >> armstrong said he did not

invent the doping and banned substance culture but he didn't stop it, either. >> my cocktails so to speak was only epo but not a lot, transfusions and testosterone, which in a weird way i almost justified because of -- because of my history obviously with testicular cancer. >> armstrong added that he did not feel he was cheating. he said he looked up the definition of cheating and it read, gaining an upper hand on a competitor. he said he didn't feel he was doing that. he was just leveling the playing field. armstrong says he will spend the rest of his life trying to earn back trust but knows some won' forgive him. a wife of a former teammate said she heard armstrong confess to doctors during his cancer treatment that he used performance-enhancing drugs. he says armstrong then questioned her sanity. >> he owed to to me.

you owed it to me lance and you dropped the ball after what you've done to me, what you've done to my family, and you couldn't own up to it. and now we're supposed to believe you? >> part 2 of the lance armstrong interview will air tonight. 6:04. stanford university is dragged into the bizarre girlfriend saga of notre dame girlfriend saga of te'o. they say the player was drawn in a romance online. they say the woman fooled manti te'o into believing she died of leukemia in september. the so-called girlfriend apparently lied about being a stanford student. >> in the post-game interviews you see all this emotion again in the subsequent follow-up pieces you see all this -- all of the talk of this and in most of those pieces, 99, 95% of them, there's no mention of stanford. >> and this girl by the way is very much alive, lives down in southern california. te'o says he was duped by her and many wonder whether he an

low 60s. today as much as 6 degrees above average at 63 in santa rosa. should be about 65 degrees in san jose. that's five degrees above normal and 62 degrees in san francisco. i think that weather is going to hold through the weekend. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. and outside right now, this is our problem spot. it's in san mateo county. if you are traveling southbound 280 right around vista point or a little past highway 92, there's an accident involving several deer. they were maybe doing a traffic break in the area. they are working to clear it now. so southbound 280 may be a little slow once you get past 92 through san mateo county. here's a live look outside. 880 the nimitz. looks great. they should have wrapped up some overnight roadwork in lanes. northbound 880 between 66 and the maze, golden gate bridge never was a problem so far this morning. dumbarton bridge roadwork on eastbound 84 has been picked up now that it's past 6:00. mass transit all on time. and a quick live look at the

bay bridge, where things look different this morning than at this time yesterday. no metering lights, and the delays are very minimal. so you can see a few backups there in some of the outer cash lanes. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> we love friday. okay, liz, thanks. a 98-year-old santa clara county woman has died in the flu and today state health officials will discuss just how widespread the flu activity is here in california. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington tells us there is some good news though if you are trying to get your hands on a vaccine and elissa joins us live here in san francisco with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. well, safeway stores across the country are getting 200,000 more doses of the vaccine so that means people can go in during regular business hours and get that shot if they want it. some of the symptoms include a fever and sore throat. so if those are some of the things you're feeling this morning, you might want to stay home. the flu this year is a respiratory viral infection that's spreading fast. it's now all over the state of

california. health officials are calling this the worst flu season in 10 years. five people in california have already died including a 98- year-old woman from santa clara county. today we'll get a better idea of the impact that the flu has on california when the cdc releases a friday flu report. flu is dangerous for children, pregnant women and eld recall so centers for disease control officials urge people to get a flu shot. >> everyone around an elderly person in the household should be vaccinated so you don't bring something home and potentially infect somebody even if they have been vaccinated. >> reporter: demand is up for vaccinations. safeway just shipped 200,000 more doses through its familiar sis throughout the country. you don't need a prescription. just go inside during normal business hours. the pharmacy here in san francisco opens at 9 a.m. live in san francisco, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> thank you. a state agency is investigating the ship pilot who was at the helm of an empty oil tanker when it sideswiped

the bay bridge. the overseas reymar hit the tower closest to yerba buena island on january 7. now the california board of port commissioners could recommend that guy kleess's license be suspended or revoked. the state probe is expected to take 90 days. the "san francisco examiner" reports kleess had three other incidents since 2009 two of which were deemed pilot error. the bay area millionaire murdered in his own mansion may be a victim of the money team. it's a notorious east oakland street gang. the "chronicle" reports ravi kumra was killed not long after a prostitute revealed details about his on length monte sereno home -- opulent monte sereno home to gang members. two of the three killers are believed to have ties to the gang. the man convicted of killing two people at the richmond/san rafael bridge toll plaza is expected to be sentenced today. investigators say nathan burris shot and killed his former

girlfriend and her friend back in 2009. the jury gave burris the death penalty. today is san jose police chief chris moore's last day on the job. he since expressed frustration at budget cuts that prompted officers to find jobs in other cities. deputy chief larry esquivel is interim chief but doesn't want the job long term. one of chief moore east final actions happened yesterday when he turned down a request by casino m8trix to have gambling facilities on the 8th floor. he followed the variety of size of sjpda's gaming administrator says multilevel gambling could present security problems. dream flights delayed. what u.s. inspectors are doing now to fix the dreamliner's battery problems. >> intense flames tearing through homes in australia. the exhausting battle for firefighters in triple-digit heat. >> and it started out as a joke for two girls to get a puppy. how the clever sisters made their dream come true with the help of facebook.

smelled something burning. japanese officials found it at an inspection that fluid leaked from a battery under the cockpit. expect extra delays at sfo over the weekend as construction crews work to lengthen the runways there. starting tonight, at 10:00 through monday morning at 8 a.m., only one runway will be closed. travelers could see delays up to 45 minutes. this is the second of three runway closures at sfo this month. so if you are flying out, take note. >> no kidding. let's check the roads with elizabeth. how's it looking is it. we are watching this accident sounds like a mess. it's southbound 280 new location approaching woodside road. all lanes are open but it took a while to clear the accident. for a while they detoured accident off the freeway. accident southbound 280 by woodside. we are seeing slowing on our traffic sensors backed up to about farm hill. so just reopened all lanes. traffic is usually light around this time of the morning so we are hoping things dissipate

quickly as far as delays. back towards the east bay no delay here. we are cruising past the oakland coliseum up towards downtown. golden gate bridge traffic has been moving at the limit since we have been on the air at 4:30 this morning. some of your bridges had some overnight roadwork including the dumbarton bridge. they have often been doing overnight roadwork doing retrofitting work so now all eastbound lanes have been reopened shortly after 6:00. mass transit is all on time. show you a few more live traffic cameras. this is 880 and 66 by oakland airport. southbound looks good and continues to move well towards hayward and the san mateo bridge looks great as well on the right side of your screen westbound 92 towards the high- rise. this is a check of your "timesaver traffic." for more on your weekend, here's lawrence. >> yeah. weekend is upon us and looking good weather-wise. you have a lot of clear skies right now a little hazy outside

in spots but otherwise, we're looking good as we sail in toward the afternoon. temperatures chilly in spots inland but mild at the coastline. and then this afternoon mild temperatures for everyone. hazy sunshine continuing. it is a "spare the air" day. high pressure continues overhead. that ridge remains in control and will stick around for the weekend so any threat of rain will be well north of the bay area. the temperatures also going to be running above the average for this time of year. now, we have seen some big-time swells along the coastline so a high surf advisory at the beaches. some of the waves building to as much as 20 feet. so stay off the rocks. it could be dangerous. no delays at sfo today coming in or going out. just some hazy sunshine and 59 degrees. around the country 59 sunny in houston, denver cloudy, 55. 45 chicago and chilly but sunny 34 degrees in new york. around the bay today we'll find numbers in the 60s in the south bay mid-60s into san jose,

about 62 in fremont and 65 degrees in palo alto. 50s and some 60s as you make your way to the east bay. and inside the bay we are enjoying plenty of sunshine, hazy but not bad. next couple of days lots of sunshine for the weekend, then chance of showers makes a return toward the middle of next week but this weekend looking spectacular and enjoy it, you guys. >> i like it. >> thank you. well, facebook hopes to change the way you make phone calls. a free call button has appeared in facebook's messenger app for iphone allowing users to place a call over wi-fi or their cellular data network. facebook had been testing the feature in canada. now it's being expanded to u.s. users. and there's no video feature and no word on when the service will be available on android or on the main facebook site. the president knows all about making deals with his daughters. the prize after his first election a new puppy. >> they got bo and two massachusetts sisters found out it also will work on facebook.

at least 6 people are dead after algeria conducted a military raid to rescue the hostages. some of the hostages to hide it out are praising the algerian army. >> everything is okay and thanks to algerian army they are taking good care of us and we were lucky that we are still alive and everything is good. >> one of the freed hostages said he was in a room with 260 people. at this point about 60 people remain unaccounted for. back here at home a mother in san jose admits to lying about an attempt to kidnap her own daughter and now police and neighbors are angry about the hoax. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in san jose with some reaction. >> reporter: very angry. and a lot of people questioning why this woman would do this. police say she cracked under their questioning after about 10 minutes and came clean about her story about her child's abduction -- attempted

abduction. >> can you explain what happened? >> reporter: that is the mother refusing to answer our reporter's questions last night. the woman originally claimed a man tried to grab her daughter a toddler from her arms in her front quart on dayo court in san jose and now investigators say the whole thing is a lie. >> there's a lot of anger again with the amount of resources not only for our detective who are out there trying to solve legitimate crimes. >> i was angry when i heard it was a lie because i thought, wow, she put us you there a lot of anxiety. >> reporter: police say the mother does have a criminal record which is why they started to focus on her during the ordeal when they didn't find any other real evidence of an abduction. lying to police is a misdemeanor and she could face six months in jail or a $1,000 fine. that is going to be up to the santa clara county district attorney to decide whether she

the bay bridge. yesterday was the worst bay bridge commute of the week. this so far is shaping up to at least be possibly one of the best. look at this. the metering lights are on for at least 15 minutes but the delays are minimal for this time of the morning only stacked up in some of the middle lanes to the end. parking lot but they are growing closer towards the first overcrossing. elsewhere to the maps. better news now all lanes open once again southbound 280. this was was south of 92. the accident involves several deer so they had to divert traffic but all lanes are open. still sluggish according to our traffic sensors through san mateo bridge. up and down the guadalupe parkway, 280, 101, it is a "spare the air" day so if you want to use mass transit, so far everything is on time. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. it has already been a nasty flu season. just how bad is it here in

california? we'll find out later today from health officials. a 98-year-old santa clara county woman is the first person to die from the virus in the golden state. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington joins us now with more on that and where you need to go for a flu shot. elissa. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. that's right. that 98-year-old woman was from santa clara county and she died earlier this month from the flu and pneumonia. this marks the first bay area death from the flu this season. four other people in the state have also died one of them in sacramento. another in the central valley and two in southern california. officials with the centers for disease control say this is the worst flu season in 10 years. it's now widespread throughout california. and it came early. it usually doesn't peak until february or march. health officials are urging people to wash their hands, cover their coughs and get a flu shot. >> they really should see their physicians. there are other things that they can do. there are antiviral drugs such as tamiflu that can be used to

help treat those people that have been exposed or who are at higher risk for complications of flu. >> reporter: getting the vaccine is the best way to avoid getting sick. it has a 62% level of effectiveness. some pharmacies are scrambling to stay stocked. safeway just got 200,000 more doses. these are safeways throughout the whole country. so you can come in here during regular business hours no appointment no prescription. and the safeway on king street in san francisco opens at 9 a.m. live in san francisco, elissa harrington, cbs 5. of the san francisco giants' pablo sandoval is in a venezuelan hospital being treated for abdominal pain. a twitter posting by his brother michael says the third baseman was diagnosed with colitis but is expected to be okay. sandoval has been playing winter ball in the venezuelan league. a janitor suspected in a deadly case of vigilante justice is due in a san jose

courtroom today. luis ricardo hernandez is accused of shooting and killing a suspected burglar at the apartment building where he works. it happened new year's eve on lewis road. his attorney says hernandez took action because he believed the victim was behind a series of auto burglaries there and was frustrated with the lack of police response. well, imagine if you stumbled upon a burglary happening in broad daylight, what would you do? ford frazier of the redwood heights section of oakland says he was nearly shot by those burglars when he tried to call for help. tuesday afternoon he saw three men across the street in his neighborhood trying to break in a neighbor's home. he called thine 101 and waited on hold as the men tried but failed to get inside that home. >> i'm standing here on the phone, and they're coming across the street there getting in the car. and the guy to be a shot at me look this and the bullet just is right in the wall over there, you see that black mark. >> the burglars got away. frazier says he was on hold for

heading into walnut creek where he says the drive is off to a great start. smooth through the san ramon valley. westbound 580 a little sluggish right now up to 22 minutes from the altamont pass out towards the dublin interchange through livermore. that's where we are starting to see a few brake lights. coming up we'll get a last check of the bay bridge toll plaza. in the meantime, back to you guys. intel reports a sharp drop in its 4th quarter earnings and as expected investors are not liking it. >> they are not liking it at all. let's chat about it. kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks joins us now on a friday. >> reporter: good morning. intel has all sorts of concerns out there for investors. they did top expectations even though revenue was down 3% to $13.5 billion. profits fell 27% to less than $2.5 billion. the key for intel is getting its chips into smartphones and tablets an area in which it's struggled. it saw a serious weakness in its pc sales last year.

server side did well. but a lot of investors are concerned that intel will struggle to quickly turn and and get those chips into tablets and smartphones. as a result, its stock is falling off this morning. it's down now by 6.5%. that's a big weight on the blue chips this morning. also saw a big drop-off in 2012 in venture capital funding. according to pricewaterhousecoopers, funding was down to $26.5 million. a number of deals down by 6%. facebook's ipo didn't go well and a number of other companies also struggled so that fell back. also vp funding really falling back in biotech and clean tech firms. they will struggle this year. stocks off to a modest start after a strong day yesterday. dow is up by 2 points. nasdaq though is down by 6. s&p is moving lower by 1 point back

welcome back. a check of your top stories now on a friday. about 64 hostages are unaccounted for as the drama drags on in algeria. the captors may want to trade two americans for terror figures jailed in the united states. estimates vary regard, the number of hostages and captors killed during an algerian military raid intended to free all the hostages. the captors are militants related to al qaeda upset about france's military action against islamic militants in neighboring mali. a san jose mother is admitting that she lied to police about an attempted kidnapping. she claimed that the man tried to take her 3-year-old daughter from her arms on her front lawn but investigators say the mother admitted to making it all up after just 10 minutes of questioning. police say the mother does have a criminal record and now she could face some new charges. and a 98-year-old santa clara county woman has died
